This March I took a trip to Morocco for my very first PKRA wave event. The event was in Dakhla, which is a very small town in Western Sahara. It is in the middle of nowhere on a small peninsula with a big lagoon on one side and long point break rights on the other. Besides that, there was not much else besides sand. Everywhere. Even our hotel was on a mountain of sand. It was a shocker coming from my little island of Oahu.
On the first day we went to the wave spot, Oum Lambouir, and the waves were about half a foot. Luckily we had a small swell during the waiting period, but the waves still did not get over 2 feet. That being said, the spot was still very fun. The wind is side-offshore, the perfect direction to park your kite and surf the wave, and the wave is very long. It runs along a rocky sandy cliff and into a bay, giving us space for lots of turns.
During our two days of competition, we had 9m wind increasing to 5.5m wind, and fun little waves. I came up against many of the girls who I had competed against in the KSP tour, and had some very close heats. In the semi finals I versed Jalou, who I’ve had some very close heats with over the last two years, and she ended up getting third. In the final I was against Kirsty Jones, but I got some good waves and came out in first place! I’m very stoked on this win for my first PKRA event and I hope I can continue this trend!
